My focus is to help individuals talk through their concerns, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, a confidential ear, and by listening to your concerns. Together we can formulate a plan for moving forward, step by step, in the direction you hope for.
We clarify what has led to the decision to have counselling , a brief assessment if required for previous history, events, medication etc. We talk through your expectations, guidelines for confidentiality; and finally, a contract for sessions as agreed.
Following this we establish what has led to the decision to have counseling, or life coaching. In the case of counseling we have a brief assessment for previous history, events that may have triggered or maintain the problem, medication etc... then work on an agenda for the session.
The general approach I use in counseling draws on techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which has strong evidence-based support for numerous problems that can be contributing to anxiety, insomnia, fears, depression, or simply stand in the way of your achieving your goals.
This involves noticing things such as automatic negative thoughts- we all tend to have these, and they can really affect mood, emotions and behavioral responses. Through working together we identify a recurring pattern and look at ways of breaking the cycle.
Other approaches such as problem solving, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, and identifying strengths can lead to new ways of approaching problems that led to you finding yourself in a stuck state.
Mindfulness approaches now have strong support in areas such as mood balance, depression and anxiety, or simply a strategy to assist in a stressful situation... this can be practiced through many differing techniques such as taking a mindful breathing minute, the 8-week focused course for mood balance, mindful eating, stretching, sensory focus, or walking.
Ideally this should be done as a group, however it does also help at an individual level.
Basically, it is focusing on one sensation, such as breathing, listening, or tasting, and being aware that, while thoughts intrude, you can simply accept and acknowledge them, then move back to the activity that you are intentionally focusing on, without self judgement.
It is NOT about controlling thoughts, nor about controlling breathing, nor about silencing the mind... it is simply, for a short time directing your intention towards an activity... this focus has a calming effect on the body under stress, through activating a vital nerve... the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve restores the body to a calmer state, countering the flight, fight or freeze response when stressed.
Counselling at the gallery can be in a homely counseling room, or because of our extensive garden, we can spend time outside if you feel more relaxed, depending on the weather. Due to the distance for some ,a cup of tea or coffee is always on offer, and offers a chance to relax and reduce tension.
Clients often sign up for a few sessions, and have the right to terminate, reduce or increase that number. A 24 hour notification is required for cancellation of appointment. Cost per appointment as at 2022: $60/ hour session.
If you have a cough or possible virus, come another day :)
I can do online sessions via Zoom but prefer one on one in real time.
I am not covered by Medicare, private health funds, NDIS, and this is reflected in the lower pricing.
I am fully registered with the Australian Counseling Association at Level 2. I have a Bachelor of Behavioural Science-Psychology(Hons 1-2); and PGrad Diploma in Neuroscience and Psychology of Mental Health (Distinction); Diploma of Counseling; Cert- 3-Minute Breathing Space ; Mindful Mood Balance for Professionals -Certificate of Completion; Certificate for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia.
Life coaching differs from counselling as it is about working towards goals you wish to achieve, such as work, health, and general well-being... you set the goals, you are the expert, I am there to support your realising your goals, as an equal, not an expert
Head out to the historic Ulooloo Gold fields via East Terrace, go straight ahead instead of turning right at the Wilkins Tourist Route about 3km out of town, follow the track until the T junction, turn right, then follow until large intersection with road cutting to left, turn left, and follow until you get to the big creek crossing, small tracks to right for parking.
Be mindful of open shafts dotting this landscapes, do not allow children to wander as this area is not set up for tourism, so take responsibility for your and your family's safety.
